He works closely with exceptional founders and teams, leveraging his expertise to build transformative businesses that not only thrive but also contribute to sustainable prosperity in a rapidly changing world.
Prior to joining DCVC, Matt was the COO of Google Quantum AI, where his team achieved the groundbreaking milestone of demonstrating that a quantum computer could surpass the capabilities of the most powerful classical supercomputers in specific tasks. Matt also led a seminal reevaluation of cold fusion, including sponsored research at MIT and other universities, and facilitated Alphabet’s investment in Commonwealth Fusion Systems. Prior to joining Google, he served as a Partner at Venrock, focusing on investments in clean energy technologies. His investments included Lucid Motors (electric vehicles), Phononic (advanced thermoelectrics), Nest (smart home controls), and TAE Technologies (plasma fusion). Matt’s professional journey also includes co-founding two Internet software companies that were acquired, as well as conducting research in superconductivity and other collective quantum effects. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from MIT and a master’s degree in management from MIT’s Sloan School of Management.
