Wind and solar facilities are generating record amounts of zero-carbon electricity, but the world still needs flexible, dispatch­able sources of baseload power for times when the sun is down or the wind isn’t blowing. Fervo Energy is putting horizontal drilling and other proven tech­nolo­gies from modern oil and gas development together with advanced fiber optic sensing to identify and exploit the best locations for heat mining. Fervo also manages fluid injection into low-perme­ability rock in a way that allows power generation to be ramped up or down as needed, effectively turning geothermal reservoirs into giant underground batteries.
