Radiant receives $750 million Army award

With its microre­actor on the cusp of a full power test, Radiant is meeting the moment

The Radiant team — makers of Kaleidos, a 1MWe microre­actor that fits inside a standard shipping container — is on a roll.

This week, the Kaleidos Demon­stra­tion Unit (KDU) was delivered on a flatbed truck to Idaho National Lab’s DOME facility, where it will start up, be taken to full power (3MW of thermal energy), and undergo a testing campaign to support its commercial deployments. This will be the West’s first-ever advanced fission reactor test at full power.

Speaking of deployment, in addition to Radiant’s contracts with the U.S. Air Force, Radiant was just awarded $750 million to provide 15 microre­ac­tors to the U.S. Army, with first delivery in 2028. The work being done in the DOME now will directly support delivering this high-value product to high-value customers.

Meanwhile, the factory where the company will manufacture its reactors is under construc­tion in Oak Ridge, TN—the walls started going up two weeks ago.

It is exciting to watch a team that has worked so hard and so trans­par­ently earn competitive, merit-based awards for a much-needed technology. We expect that Kaleidos will be in high demand not just from the Pentagon, but from all corners of the private sector. Radiant shows that the best deep tech is the most useful deep tech.
