Welcoming Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel Luis Bacalao to DCVC

Luis brings deep experience in deep tech legal strategy and guidance for founders

We are excited to announce that Luis Bacalao has joined DCVC as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel. Luis has been in venture capital since 2016, when he joined Khosla Ventures as Assistant General Counsel. He then served as General Counsel of Y Combinator’s Continuity Fund before returning to Khosla Ventures as an Operating Partner focusing on special projects.

Luis brings deep legal experience gained across his time in venture capital and in private practice at Fenwick & West in San Francisco and Davis Polk in New York. Over the course of his career, he has negotiated and closed hundreds of deals across industry, stage, and jurisdiction. Luis received a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and a J.D. from Columbia Law School.

During his second tenure at Khosla Ventures, Luis helped the portfolio navigate thorny business, operational, regulatory, and legal issues across vertical and stage. In addition, Luis managed all complex deal flow for the fund.

Since 2010, DCVC has backed entrepreneurs using deep tech to solve urgent trillion-dollar problems in global industries ripe for technological progress, and we’re excited for Luis to join us on this mission. The breadth of our investments in computing/AI, energy and climate, quantum computing, manufacturing/materials, medicine, defense, robotics, and more, and our ambition to lead in all of these investment areas, demands extensive expertise working with deep tech companies and experience leading the legal strategy of a growing venture firm. Luis will be critical as we enter the next phase of DCVC’s growth.

We look forward to Luis becoming a strategic counsel to DCVC and helping our growing family of portfolio companies reach their full potential.
