Waste, overproduction, and an ethic of disposability contribute to massive carbon footprint for the fashion industry — it’s estimated that the sector is responsible for 2 to 4 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Unspun is developing robotic 3D weaving technology that will eventually be paired with personalized body scanning to skip the traditional cut-and-sew process (and its long distribution chain) and enable automated, on-demand apparel production. Unspun’s Vega weaving machine is faster than a traditional knitting machine and produces fewer waste scraps. The company says a pair of pants made using Vega has a 53 percent lower global warming potential and uses 49 percent less energy and 39 percent less water than a pair made using an air-jet weaving machine and the traditional supply chain.
